First taste of Vietnam: Saigon

We arrived in Vietnam, after a relatively easy border crossing. We stayed with a local lady, Dilinh, who lived right in the middle of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). She took us out on Friday night for a traditional meal and a hairwash/head/shoulder/face massage. Quite a painful experience. I'm not sure how I feel about someone hitting me repeatedly on the face/head in the name of a massage. Still, we were assured this was a 'tender' massage rather than one for the locals.

Tim enjoyed his first wash and blow dry (!)

We decided to give the local whisky a miss (below). Instead, Tim had brought some Glenmorangie with him so we enjoyed a wee dram with Dilinh on her rooftop in Saigon.

Yes, that really is a snake in whisky

The next morning, she took us on a trip to the local market, where there were all kinds of delicacies.

Frogs anyone?!

After a spot of sightseeing, we were pretty exhausted and whiled away the afternoon in a French Bakery. Sometimes you just need a good cup of tea.

Our highlight of Saigon was going to a show called 'The Mist' at the Opera House. We were handed a pair of salad servers with our programmes on the way in. We assumed this was standard practice at Vietnamese theatres, and sat there waiting for our cue to use them somehow. It soon became apparent that the show involved some audience participation in the form of salad server percussion. We weren't entirely sure what was going on most of the time, but enjoyed the show nonetheless!

We thought Cambodia had a lot of motorbikes, until we arrived in Saigon...

Motorbike madness

Oooft, it was hot
