Hoi An by night

At night, Hoi An is transformed. Traditional silk lanterns line the streets and it is absolutely beautiful. Apparently, it is believed that if you hang a few lanterns outside your house, it will bring the family happiness.

We managed to time our visit with the 'Legendary Night' festival. Each lunar month, when there is a full moon, they close the town to motorbikes/cars and any electrical lighting is turned off. The result is stunning. Hundreds of colourful lanterns float down the river, whilst locals are out milling about and playing traditional games.

I haven't quite mastered the art of moving objects and nighttime photography (!) so the pictures are somewhat blurred...but you get the gist.

We went out on a little boat and sent our lanterns twinkling down the river.
